Why are ransomware attacks on the rise?

Hackers are likely finding that victims are paying up to unlock their files as a result of a ransomware attack. How could they know that victims are paying? The information is public and often discussed in the media. 

We need to be sharing how to reduce risk and trying to avoid incidents by being cyber aware and more secure as a whole.
